The Extended Guitar

(Available for download soon)

‘The Extended Guitar’ is a Virtual Instrument library for the free Decent Sampler plugin. Created by Rónan Murphy as part of a 2023 masters thesis project at Trinity College Dublin, it uses original samples of unorthodox guitar sounds to create a fully playable software instrument that responds to MIDI input.

With over 500 samples, the instrument contains 18 pre-sets. These are six original instruments, each with three tuning systems: Standard 12 tone equal temperament (12-TET), 19-TET, and 24-TET. Round-robins and velocity layers are used to create realistic sounding instruments.

A user can switch between ‘Mono’ and ‘Stereo’ modes, adjust volume and tone, shape the envelope the of samples using ADSR controls, add drive to taste, and choose from three unique impulse responses for controllable convolution. The ‘1+1’ pre-set allows the user to play any two of the other five instruments simultaneously in a virtual duet!

See below for more information on how samples were created.
